  • Ocean Sunfish, Mola Mola, can be found in the Galapagos, specifically Punta Vicente Roca, and are one of the largest fish in the sea, reaching more than 2,000 lbs and hosting as many as forty varieties of parasites, food for a number of reef fish that clean the giants when they rise from frigid depths.

  • A Great Hammerhead Shark, Sphyrna mokarran, attacks a Goliath Grouper, Epinephelus itajara, which has been improperly released by an angler, offshore Singer Island, Florida. Large fish, such as this Goliath, must first be vented before being returned to the water. The process of venting a fish includes removing the gas inside the fish which prevents it from diving below the surface, making it easy prey to predators like Hammerheads and other sharks.

  • The critically endangered Small Tooth Sawfish, Pristis pectinata, gather offshore the Florida coastline on deep, silty reefs during winter. This species' population has declined by more than 95% due to the destruction and alternation of coastal habitats such as mangroves and the use of nets, which easily trap these giant fish. Historically ranging from the Carolinas to Texas, the species exists only in Florida nowadays, where it's protected and considered stable.
